My Vacation (Part 2)

Today we are in Latvia.  We arrived on Thursday, and yesterday we went to the water park.  It was great.  I only went down one of the big slides, and it scared me to death!  I almost fell out!  So, I decided not to do the big tube slides anymore.  My dad went down the fastest one, and even he was freaked at that!

I usually stayed around Captain Kidd's island.  My favorite slide there was short.  It was like the big slides.  It had two tubes that squirted water on you as you went down, and you splashed into a big pool of water at the end.  They also had water cannons you could shoot people with.  One the parts I hated was getting soaked by lots of water when Captain Kidd's bucket got full and dumped hundreds of gallons of water on everybody.  Good thing I found a place where I could stay dry when it did that.

The island had a river going around it.  You get onto tubes or you just swim.  It has a fast moving current that pushes you around.  In one of the caves you went through, there was a waterfall that came down on top of you.  And if you at a certain point in the river when Captain Kidd's bucket spilled, you could get hit by the water.  One of my friends from school was at the water park too.  I first saw him on the river.  We later met in the wave pool and played around for a while.  His name is Marius.

One of the places that I did not like was the wave pool, but I had to stay there sometimes because my little sister Emma always wanted to go there.  Sometimes, they would start the wave machine, and the pool would be like the ocean.  Emma also like a place downstairs where you could slide from one pool to the other.  They also had a slide in just the lower pool.  It had a fountain squirting water on you in the upper part.

They also had one pool in the Shark Zone where the pool was inside and outside.  We went outside for a little bit.  The air was about 15 degrees Fahrenheit.  When we were outside, my dad jumped into a freezing cold pool right next to the warm pool.

Another tube was called the tornado.  You went down a tube and then came into a big open area that was round like a bowl.  You went around and around until you came to the bottom, then dropped into another tube.  I didn't do this one, but my parents loved it.

We are leaving this morning to head back to Klaipeda.

My Vacation (Part 1)

Over Spring Break, my family has come to Tallinn, Estonia.  This is our second day, and we are planning to stay here for three days.  After this, we are going to a water park in Riga, Latvia.  I will tell you about that in "My Vacation (Part 2)."

We are staying in the Old Town of Tallinn, which dates back to the 9th century.  So far, what I have seen includes a museum about how native people from Asia moved to Alaska.  In one part, they talked about the Russians taking over Alaska but later selling it to America.  They also had old coins.  You could actually see a mold that was used to make coins.  Also, if you wanted to look at it close, they had magnifying glasses.  In one corner of another room, they had knights armor and all the weapons they used.  They had a house that was used by early Estonian tribes.  They had a display of a funeral, where they burned the person's body on a big pile of wood (it looked like a real fire, but it was just tissue paper with red lights and a fan).

We saw several churches yesterday too.  One was a Russian church.  Another was one where my grandmother was baptized.  She was born in Tallinn.  Another church was where my great-great-grandfather's brother was the preacher.  They have lookouts from the upper part of the city where you could see great views of the Old Town.  I actually saw three of them when I was here a year and a half ago.

Last night, we went to the Peppersack restaurant.  I had some bread with smoked salmon on it.  I tried fish eggs (caviar), but I didn't really like it.  After that, we waited for a sword fight.  It was supposed to be at 8:00, but it turned out to be 8:30.  Mom and Emma got tired and went back to the hotel we are staying at (Vana Wiru Hotel).  Dad and I stayed and got some pictures of the fight.  One time, the grim reaper came, and the guys in the fight thought that one of them was going to die.  But it turned out that the grim reaper had just come to get a beer.

I will write more later when we get to Riga.

Basketball Game

Last night, Dad and I went to a basketball game.  In the morning, at 11:00, we had breakfast with the Neptunas team.  They are the local Klaipeda basketball team.  We got to talk with some of the players.  During the breakfast, we watched some of the Olympics, including cross-country skiing, with the basketball team.  We don't have a TV, so this was the first time I had seen the Olympics this year.

At the game, Neptunas played Lietuvos Rytas, a team from Vilnius.  Neptunas lost 88-80.  This first half, most of our players tried to get shots from the three point line, because we were behind.  At one point, we even went ahead, but the other team quickly got the lead again.  At the end of the game, we were losing badly, so we were doing intentional fouls on a poor player on the other team, so we wouldn't lose time.  But, we still lost.

Nanny's Visit

My grandmother came to Lithuania from the US.  She brought Christmas present for me, my sister, my mother, and my father.  One of my favorites is a HoverDisk with Spider Man on it.  You blow it up and throw it, and it does all kinds of tricks and flips.  I also got a remote controlled car.  We took Nanny to the Hill of Crosses.  This was my first time going there too.  At the Hill of Cross it was so cold that some crosses were almost buried in snow.  It was -17 degrees Fahrenheit while we were there.  But I did have a fun time skating in the parking lot, which was covered with ice.

Nanny has gone back to America now.  My mom has gone there too.  My grandfather is very sick with Alzheimer's.  Mom is helping her mom move stuff from grandpa's bedroom to the assisted living facility where he is going to be living now.  My dad is keeping us by himself in Lithuania for two weeks.

I am sick too.  Dad picked me up at school early on Friday.  And, when he went to pick up my sister from school, I stayed at home by myself for 45 minutes.  This is the first time I have ever been home by myself.

Tennis Lessons

I'm taking tennis lessons downtown.  We just started yesterday.  This is my second time taking tennis lessons, because I took them last summer on Squirrel Island.  I learned backhand and forehand.  The reason I am taking them is because I like it and the teacher is also teaching his kids to speak English.  So, I get to practice tennis and they get to practice English.  They said if I would speak English with their kids, I could take the lessons for free.

I really like their two kids.  Their names are Lukas and Christoper.  I even went to their house after the lesson.  We had dinner in front of the TV.  Christopher has a punching bag, so we played with that for a while.  Lukas has three swords (one wooden and two plastic).  I am looking forward to my next lesson and to my next visit to their house.  They seems like good friends.  They don't speak as much English as I thought.  They speak some English, but at their house they spoke Lithuanian.
